IN THE LATE 70s I MANAGED THE GROUP JAPAN. IT TOOK FIVE YEARS TO BREAK THEM IN THE UK AND DURING THAT TIME THEY PLAYED SUPPORT FOR BLUE OYSTER CULT. (EXCERPTED FROM MY BOOK 'BLACK VINYL WHITE POWDER')
One glass bounced off the high hat but Steve slightly moved his head and kept thumping away- it was so cool. Security managed to grab the perp who was a tall drunken middle aged yokel….god knows what he was doing there….. best wishes to you Simon!!!
I was at the Glasgow Apollo gig and was in the queue when a fully made up Japan politely made there way through a sea of double denim clad Glaswegians, making their way into the venue. Genuinely one of the bravest things I have ever seen. I became an immediate fan.
I saw Japan at the music machine in Camden (now Koko) and they were magnificent and heroic. Some louts threw beer glasses at them but the band managed to dodge them and keep playing. Most of the audience understood how wonderful they were. A wonderful gig.
Those monthly gigs at the Music Machine were terrific. They came almost two years after the Blue Oyster Cult tour. And by then they were huge in Japan.
To be honest Dave, it was just a bit of manager's blag - desperate that he didn't cancel the tour, with all the financial repercussions. But he grabbed the idea and used it brilliantly.
Great story! I have now read all of your books, what to do?
I'm working on the next one but it will be a long wait - maybe a year.
Another fantastic tale fantastically told. Thank you again Simon!

Corporal Jones was right..."They didn't like it up 'em" 😜
